On Golden Pond....
Ellacoya State Park is situated on the banks of Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire, covering about 70 square miles when Paugus Bay is included with a maximum depth of 212 feet.
The lake contains at least 253 islands, half of which are less than a quarter-acre in size, and is indented by several peninsulas, with a total shoreline of approximately 288 miles. The driving distance around the lake is 63 miles.
We get a panoramic view of the lake aboard the MS Mount Washington's 2 1/2 hour cruise and champagne brunch with live jazz on Sunday morning.
Even though it is a bit windy and misty, the cruise, the music and the food are outstanding.
Theater and music are important to the residents of the area! The Village Players Theater in Wolfeboro was featuring 'Almost Maine', a play by John Cariani.
'On a cold, clear, moonless midwinter's night, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. Residents fall in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways.' Every Saturday night during the summer, live bands perform in the town's bandshell to a packed lawn of enthusiastic fans. The pedestrian-friendly town is quaint and inviting with its charming shops and restaurants overlooking the marina.
In nearby Laconia, we are impressed with the quality of the Off-Broadway production of 'Gigi,' a play by Anita Loos from the novel by Colette. "'Thank heavens for little girls!' Before Maurice Chevalier immortalized those words in the classic movie musical, there was Gigi, the hit Broadway play which launched the career of the then-unknown Audrey Hepburn. It’s turn-of-the-century Paris and young Gigi is being trained by her grandmother and aunt in the ways of the courtesan. While they instruct her to primp and preen, is true love waiting just under her pretty little nose?" The Winnipesaukee Theater seats around 100 for an intimate setting. The sets, the costumes, the music, the lighting are all first-rate. And the actors are superb! Truly a delightful evening of theater!
Lake Winnipesaukee, a glacial lake, has been a tourist destination for more than a century, especially for residents escaping the summer heat of Boston and New York City. A popular getaway for celebrities, politicians, and families alike, guests have included Princess Grace and Prince Ranier, French President Sarkozy, and Drew Barrymore, while Mitch Romney owns a home in Wolfeboro. The Native American name Winnipesaukee means either "smile of the Great Spirit" or "beautiful water in a high place." At the outlet of the Winnipesaukee River, the Winnipesaukee Indians, a subtribe of the Pennacook, lived and fished at a village called Acquadocton. Today, the site is called The Weirs, named for the weirs colonists discovered when first exploring the region.
We enjoy the temps, the vistas, and the ambiance of Lake Winnipesaukee so much, we may look for our own little slice of heaven for a summer place!
