Quechee, Quechee, Quoo Vermont

Hundreds of thousands of visitors stop each year to take in the breathtaking views of the Quechee Gorge.  Vermont’s deepest gorge was formed by glacial activity approximately 13,000 years ago.

The Ottauquechee River, flowing 165 feet below viewing points along Route 4, and the trails leading down to it make for a great hike!  Sadly, Hurricane Irene did a lot of damage to one end of the gorge, so part of the trail is closed for repairs.

Vermont Institute of Natural Science on Route 4 near Woodstock and the Quechee Gorge has been an environmental education and wildlife conservation and care center since 1972.  It is known nationally for innovative natural science curricula and education programs for learners of all ages.  It operates New England’s premier avian wildlife rehabilitation clinic at the VINS Nature Center.

Daily, VINS offers three Raptor Encounter shows featuring falcons, hawks and owls to help in understanding the defining characteristics that make a bird a raptor and their adaptations for life as a predator on the wing.

Hands-on artifacts and materials enhance this special experience.

The center's main attraction is the aviary where rescued birds including a variety of owls, eagles, falcons, and vultures reside year-round.

The peak of the leaf peeping season is October 12 for the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

Hurricane Irene did extensive damage in the billions of dollars to the area.

Many bridges and roads are washed out and are undergoing repairs.

In nearby Lebanon, the 23-mile Rail Trail offers a great ride over railroad tressles with rivers flowing along its path.

Dartmouth College, founded in 1769 by the Reverend Eleazar Wheelock, in nearby Hanover, NH, a member of the Ivy League, is a small undergraduate and graduate College with three leading professional schools:  Dartmouth Medical School, Thayer School of Engineering and Tuck School of Business.

One of Reverend Wheelock's first students was Samson Occom, a Mohegan Indian, the main  character in Cooper's 'Last of the Mohicans.'

One of the many GOP Debates is going on at the same time as an Occupy Wall Street Demonstration.

We have a fine time visiting with some of the demonstrators,

checking out the FOX News equipment,

and meeting a sweet sorority girl on her way to a Beach Party!

And a good time was had by all!
